St. Michael's By-the-Sea

Compline

An Order for Compline

Compline, the final service of the Daily Offices, is offered each Wednesday night at 8:30 pm in the chapel.  This peaceful evening service consists of a series of prayers and hymns to close the day.  Candlelight and soft musical accompaniment add to the peacefulness of this worship time.   We invite you to join us for this prayerful meditation Wednesday evening.

Fr. Doran, Mark Nielsen, Mary-Beth Lutz, Michael Chapin, and Becky Gleason lead Compline.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne,
and illumine this night with your celestial brightness;
that by night as by day your people may glorify your holy Name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

COMPLINE

Compline is the last of seven prayer services
that comprise the divine office.
It originated in the dormitory prayers of Christian monastic
communities in the 4th century. It is a brief, simple service
at the completion of the day; a way of returning the thoughts
of our hears to the Lord before closing our eyes to sleep.

SILENCE

Silence is the absence of sound.  It is the space that shapes
the still small voice of God in the quiet of our hearts.  It is
the canvas upon which the word of God is revealed.  Please
observe holy silence before the service, and at the prescribed
time within it.  We invite you to join us in raising our
collective hears in prayer at these times.

MUSIC

The history of music is deeply rooted in the Christian
Church.  Throughout Christendom, the Church has born the
most beautiful music ever produced.

THE SERVICE

Compline consists of some opening prayers, a psalm, Holy
Scripture, a hymn, and closing prayers.  Please follow along
in the black Book of Common Prayer beginning on page 127.
