St. Michael's By-the-Sea

Healing Prayer Teams

Healing Prayer Teams are available

on the SECOND and FOURTH SUNDAYS of the month.

The Prayer Team will be in the Chapel after the 7:45 a.m. Mass
and in the Church in front of the pulpit after the 9am and 10:30 am Masses.

A number of individuals and family units are regular recipients of the Sacrament of Holy Unction (anointing with holy oil for healing) on the first and third Sundays of the month.  Numerous accounts of healings that have occurred point to God’s blessings received in this parish simply by being faithful to sharing in His sacramental grace.  We have become familiar with the practice and are now ready to move more deeply into the joy of this sacrament in two ways:

   1) ASK SPECIFICALLY: The Lord wants to heal us of specific spiritual, emotional and physical needs. When people came to Jesus for healing, He often asked them, “What do you want?”  Holy Unction is not a “general blessing” but for the purpose of healing specific physical, emotional and spiritual brokenness.  It is good to get in the habit of asking particularly for healing in one or more of these areas when receiving Holy Unction.  In so doing we will discover the Lord’s specific touch in our lives.  For example, one could say, “for physical healing for my eyes,” or “for emotional healing,” or “for a difficult relationship.”

   2) PRAYER TEAM: Often times more is needed than can be provided with the short prayer and anointing with oil in the Sacrament of Holy Unction.  An immediate answer to prayer is more often the exception than the rule.  Even Jesus had to pray more than once or for longer periods on a number of occasions.  Jesus also sent out the disciples two by two and promised, “When two or three are gathered in my Name, I will be with them.”  Bringing prayer requests to a trained and experienced Prayer Team provides privacy, confidentiality, and an opportunity for listening and waiting upon the Lord for His guidance through the Holy Spirit.  Personal advice is not given.  The purpose is to discern God’s will and pray for the root cause of the physical, spiritual or emotional malady.  Prayer Team members will be using holy oil blessed by the priest for use by the laity as an extension of the Sacrament of Holy Unction, also known as a “sacramental.”

Prayer Team Members:  Marilyn Ganskow, Jane Hird, Daisy Rathbone.

"Marilyn Ganskow has responsibility for three areas in our parish:  selecting and instructing individuals to serve on healing prayer teams; praying with individuals for inner healing, spiritual healing and physical healing; and training ministry leaders in the parish for prayer ministry.

 Marilyn is committed and experienced in prayer ministry.  She spent a number of years allowing the Lord to touch her through the ministry of the church and, through that experience, has dedicated her life to exercising God’s gift of healing with others.  She also brings the gifts of compassion, wisdom and down-to-earth life application."

Prison Ministry

Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature;
the old things passed away; behold, new things have come (2 Cor. 5:17).

Marilyn Ganskow also faithfully visits jail inmates.  Others involved with inmates frequently hear from the women that their time of prayer with Marilyn brings peace to their souls.  In a place where hope and compassion are rare, the women in prison have said that Marilyn brings God’s love to them and many of them receive Christ’s gifts of salvation and healing.
