Assistant for Pastoral Care and Outreach
Before returning to St. Michael’s November 2003, “Deacon Fred” had a
variety of life experiences. He lived as a monk in Palm Desert, California
1988-92, then resumed work as an attorney 1992-96, after which he served in at
the local state prison as a full-time chapel volunteer 1996-2000 and then at St.
Mark’s Episcopal Church – City Heights 1999-2003 where his focus was a ministry
to parolees. He initially joined St. Michael’s in 1992 following the
closure of the monastery retreat center and sale of the property. St.
Michael’s sponsored him for ordination as a permanent deacon which took place
June 12, 1999.
Born in Louisiana, Deacon Fred was raised and educated in the
suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. For over 20 years he was employed by
a large multi-national corporation, as a staff attorney.
Prior to and during his monastery years, Deacon Fred’s
experience also included membership in the local chapter to the National
Episcopal Coalition on Alcohol & Drugs, representing the diocese at both
national and international conferences. He has been active in the Cursillo
movement for some 20 years, working weekends and serving on the diocesan
governing body (Secretariat) both as a lay and clergy member. He was
introduced to his prison experience via KAIROS which is the prison counterpart
to Cursillo.
Deacon Fred and his wife Barbara reside in Carlsbad.
Barbara, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, serves as St. Michael’s Pastoral
Counselor and has been a member of both its chancel choir and vestry.
